for the Arts, Eype, Nr. Bridport, 7.30pm. The Mellstock Band, named after
the fictional title given by Thomas Hardy to the singers and musicians of
the parish of Stinsford, presents its new Christmas show The Leaves of Life.
It is sung and performed on instruments that would have been current in
Hardy’s time, including the serpent, a baffling hybrid of brass and
woodwind easily recognised by its snake-like shape and which produces a ‘rich,
deep note’. The Mellstock Band is well known and loved in Dorset and their
popular shows are unique entertainments of music, song and the spoken word,
using authentic instruments and period costume. The poetry and prose come
from Hardy and other writers, including the country poets John Clare and
William Barnes. They combine with the music to illuminate its background and
create the perfect atmosphere.Tickets available from Bridport Tourist
